Near Munich, Kehlis’s bunker

The elevator slid silently down into the depths of the cavernous underground bunker. Number Eleven watched from the glass tube as the elevator car descended, floor by floor, past brightly lit hallways and gray concrete floors. The ride brought back years-old memories. The last time he had been here, he had been wheeled down in a portable hospital bed; he had been on psychotropic drugs and barely cognizant of what was happening. There were only a few images buried in his memory, but now they crawled out of hiding like cockroaches smelling food. Number Eleven tried to block them out of his mind, concentrating completely on the floors sliding by.

After seven floors, the car stopped and the doors slid apart. Two guardsmen blocked his way as he entered the lowest level of the high-security section deep below Kehlis’s bunker.

“Authorization?” one of the guardsmen barked.

“Number One is expecting me,” Number Eleven replied calmly.

“Identification, please!”

“Number Eleven, Confessor, first generation.” He held up the Lifewatch on his wrist, activated it, and played back Number One’s orders as an audio message.

The two guardsmen nodded and stepped aside. “Number One is waiting in room seven point one two. Down the hall, third door on the right.”

Number Eleven’s path was marked by white walls and white tile floors. All the doors he passed were locked. They were automatic sliding doors made from polished metal with engraved door numbers with a matte finish. He stopped in front of the door that said “7.12.”

He felt a twinge in his stomach. His daily report to the Head Confessor bothered him and that was… unexplainable. Just like those thoughts in his head when he’d realized he’d been tricked by Maria Król. He had thought about it and had come to the only logical conclusion: something was changing in him, and it wasn’t good. Where was this change coming from? Was he sick? Was there a tumor growing in his head? Or a cyst? Maybe Carl Oskar Fossey had been wrong, and the damage to his emotional center was not irreparable. Was he returning to normal? Was his brain regenerating itself?

His Lifewatch beeped. It was time for his appointment. Number Eleven placed a finger on the fingerprint scanner and stepped through the door as it opened.

Number One had his back turned to him and was looking out a window into a laboratory at the back of the room. He was watching a man strapped down in a kind of examination chair and connected to an EEG. Several people in white lab coats were busy adjusting the connections and equipment settings.

Number One did not take his eyes off the proceedings in the lab. “Right on time, Number Eleven. Please, come closer.”

Number Eleven obeyed, stepping closer to the gray-haired Number One at the window. The man in the chair was screaming and twisting, pulling at the metal mesh chains that kept him strapped to the chair, his mouth wide open with horror or pain. Nothing could be heard, though, through the thick soundproof glass.
